The RCIA process goes through four distinct periods:
The Period of Evangelization and Precatechumenate (The Period of Inquiry) - this is a period of searching where a person is actively desiring to learn more about the Catholic Church and the experience of Faith. They most likely learn first from contact with people of faith, which leads them to inquire about programs such as RCIA.
The Period of the Catechumenate - this is a period when, together with others, an inquirer begins to ask questions and explore the dynamics of the Catholic faith and traditions: During this time, the Catechumens consider what God is saying to them in Scriptures, and how they are responding to God's call. Together with the RCIA Team and their sponsors, inquirers learn and grow in their understanding of the Catholic faith in their life.
The Period of Purification and Enlightenment - this is a period of preparation marked by prayer, study, and spiritual direction as RCIA participants move towards reception of Sacraments at the Easter Vigil. Those who are seeking Baptism become the Elect, and attend the Rite of Election where they are formally greeted by the Bishop, along with all the other Elect of the Diocese.
The Period of Mystagogy - this period is defined by its title. Mystagogy is the ancient word for "interpretation of mystery." Having completed their Sacraments of Initiation, new fully initiated Catholics take the time between Easter and Pentecost to interpret how Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist are working in the context of their own personal and spiritual life.
